What is Communion?
Communion is the sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings, especially when the exchange is on a mental or spiritual level; it is the service of Christian worship at which bread and wine are consecrated and shared.
The Greek Word for Communion is Koinonia. Koinonia means
participation and fellowship. It is contributory help, spiritual fellowship, a
fellowship in the Spirit.
The Hebrew Word for Communion is Devakut. Devakut means “cleaving”,
to cling or stick. Cleaving, clinging or sticking to the Lord as noted in proverbs
18:24 – “a friend who sticks closer than a brother”
It is fellowship between Christ and His people; believers with one another.
Again, the Greek word and definition for Communion “Koinonia” which means participation and fellowship. Participation is defined as the act of taking part in something; it is our involvement, part, contribution, or association. Fellowship is a friendly association, especially with those who share a common interest. We can participate in something all day long. We can be present and active but not interested.
Communion is not about ritual, but we partake because we want to be present, active, and because as Christians we are interested in remembering what Jesus the Christ did for us.
